Hepatic System
Synopsis
The hepatic system is centered around the liver, one of the body’s most vital and multitasking organs. This system also includes the gallbladder and bile ducts, forming part of the hepatobiliary network. It plays a critical role in metabolism, detoxification, digestion, nutrient storage, hormone processing, immune function, and blood filtration.
The liver receives blood from two sources: the hepatic artery (oxygenated blood) and the portal vein (nutrient-rich blood from the digestive tract). It filters toxins, metabolizes drugs, synthesizes cholesterol, produces bile for fat digestion, converts excess glucose into glycogen, and breaks down old red blood cells. It also stores fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) and iron.
When the hepatic system is overwhelmed by toxins, infections (e.g., hepatitis viruses), alcohol, poor diet, or metabolic disorders, it can lead to fatty liver disease, hepatitis, jaundice, gallstones, or liver cirrhosis. Liver dysfunction may show as fatigue, poor digestion, hormonal imbalance, skin irritation, or brain fog.
Natural Remedies
Liver-supportive herbs: Milk thistle, dandelion, and turmeric enhance liver detoxification and regeneration.
Bitter foods (arugula, dandelion greens, artichoke): Stimulate bile production for fat digestion and toxin clearance.
Hydration and fiber: Help flush waste and reduce liver burden.
Avoid alcohol, processed foods, and high-fructose corn syrup: These increase liver stress and inflammation.
Cruciferous vegetables: Broccoli, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts aid in phase I and II liver detox pathways.
Maintain healthy weight: Obesity increases the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
Limit exposure to environmental toxins: Choose natural cleaning and body care products when possible.
