Synopsis

The liver is the body’s largest internal organ and a vital metabolic powerhouse located in the upper right abdomen beneath the diaphragm. Weighing approximately 3 pounds in adults, the liver performs over 500 essential functions, including detoxification, bile production, blood filtration, metabolism of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, nutrient storage, hormone processing, and immune regulation.

Blood enters the liver via the hepatic artery (oxygen-rich) and the hepatic portal vein (nutrient-rich from the digestive tract). Hepatocytes—its primary cells—process nutrients, neutralize toxins, and produce bile, which is stored in the gallbladder and essential for digesting fats. The liver also synthesizes important proteins like albumin and clotting factors and helps maintain blood sugar balance through glycogen storage.

Because of its central role in filtering and detoxifying, the liver is highly exposed to environmental toxins, medications, infections (like hepatitis viruses), alcohol, and metabolic stress. Liver-related conditions include fatty liver disease (NAFLD/NASH), hepatitis, cirrhosis, bile duct obstruction, jaundice, and liver cancer. Symptoms of liver dysfunction may include fatigue, nausea, dark urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, digestive issues, or right upper abdominal pain.

Natural Remedies

Liver-supportive herbs: Milk thistle, dandelion, and turmeric help protect liver cells and promote detoxification.

Hydration and fiber: Assist with toxin elimination and prevent bile stagnation.

Cruciferous vegetables: Broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts enhance liver enzyme pathways (phase I and II detox).

Limit alcohol, processed foods, and refined sugars: These increase the risk of fatty liver and inflammation.

Healthy weight and exercise: Prevent fat accumulation in liver tissue.

Avoid excessive medications and environmental toxins: Especially acetaminophen, alcohol, and chemical-laden personal care products.

B vitamins, choline, and glutathione precursors: Aid in liver enzyme activity and tissue repair.
