Synopsis of Colds (general)

The common cold is a mild, self-limiting viral infection of the upper respiratory tract, affecting the nose, throat, and sinuses. It is typically caused by rhinoviruses but can also result from infections with coronaviruses, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), adenoviruses, or parainfluenza viruses. Colds are highly contagious and spread through respiratory droplets, direct contact with infected surfaces, or touching the mouth, nose, or eyes after exposure.

Symptoms usually appear 1–3 days after exposure and include nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat, cough, mild fever, fatigue, sneezing, and sometimes watery eyes. Most colds resolve within 7–10 days without medical intervention. Although usually harmless, they can lead to complications like sinus infections, middle ear infections, or exacerbations of asthma in susceptible individuals.

Types (Based on Symptoms):

  • Mild Cold: Runny nose, slight sore throat, minimal discomfort.

  • Moderate Cold: Congestion, coughing, noticeable fatigue, mild fever.

  • Complicated Cold: Secondary bacterial infections like sinusitis, ear infections, or bronchitis.

Common Causes:

  • Rhinovirus (most frequent)

  • Coronavirus (common cold strains, not COVID-19 variants)

  • Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)

  • Adenovirus

  • Parainfluenza virus

Severity Factors:

  • Young children, elderly adults, and immunocompromised individuals may experience more severe or prolonged symptoms.

  • Lifestyle factors such as poor nutrition, sleep deprivation, smoking, and chronic stress can worsen severity.

  • Complications are more likely when colds persist longer than 10 days or symptoms worsen after initial improvement.

When to See a Doctor:

  • Symptoms lasting more than 10–14 days without improvement

  • High fever (above 102°F or 39°C)

  • Severe sore throat, sinus pain, or earache

  • Shortness of breath, chest pain, or wheezing

  • Symptoms worsening after initially getting better

  • If at high risk due to chronic health conditions
