Failure to Thrive
Synopsis
Failure to thrive (FTT) is a term used primarily in infants and young children to describe a condition in which growth in weight, height, or head circumference is significantly below age-appropriate norms. It can also be used in elderly populations when there is unexplained weight loss, decreased appetite, functional decline, and poor health outcomes without a single identifiable disease.
In children, FTT may stem from inadequate caloric intake, nutrient malabsorption, increased metabolic demand, or underlying medical or psychosocial factors. Common causes include feeding difficulties, neglect, food allergies, gastrointestinal disorders (e.g., celiac disease, GERD), chronic illness, or poverty. In infants, signs may include poor weight gain, irritability, delayed developmental milestones, and low energy.
In adults—particularly the elderly—FTT is often multifactorial and may be associated with malnutrition, depression, chronic disease, dementia, social isolation, or medication side effects. It is a serious red flag for decline in health and requires comprehensive evaluation.
Diagnosis involves growth chart tracking, dietary assessments, physical exams, and lab tests to rule out underlying causes. Treatment focuses on identifying and correcting the root cause, improving nutritional intake, and supporting development.
When to see a doctor:
Medical evaluation is essential if a child is not meeting growth milestones, is consistently underweight, or if there is unexplained weight loss or decline in health in elderly individuals.
Natural Remedies
Frequent, Nutrient-Dense Meals: Offer high-calorie, high-protein snacks and meals multiple times daily.
Healthy Fats and Oils: Add olive oil, avocado, or nut butters to foods to increase caloric density.
Smoothies and Meal Supplements: Easy-to-digest, nutrient-rich blends can support both children and adults with low appetite.
Feeding Environment: Create a calm, supportive space around meals; address stress or distractions.
Monitor Growth at Home: Regular tracking of weight and height can help identify progress or setbacks early.
