Gangrene
Synopsis
Gangrene is a serious condition in which body tissue dies due to loss of blood supply, infection, or trauma. It most often affects the extremities—fingers, toes, feet, and legs—but can also occur in internal organs or muscles. Gangrene requires immediate medical attention, as it can spread quickly and become life-threatening.
There are several types of gangrene:
-
Dry gangrene: Caused by poor blood flow, often from peripheral artery disease or diabetes. The area becomes dry, shriveled, and darkened.
-
Wet gangrene: Results from infection in addition to blood loss. The tissue becomes swollen, blistered, and oozes fluid.
-
Gas gangrene: A rare, deadly form caused by Clostridium bacteria, which release toxins and gas into tissue.
-
Internal gangrene: Affects organs like the intestines or gallbladder and is a surgical emergency.
Common causes include:
-
Diabetes
-
Severe injuries or burns
-
Atherosclerosis
-
Frostbite
-
Immunocompromise
-
Post-surgical complications
Symptoms may include discoloration, numbness, foul odor, pain, swelling, and eventually black or green necrotic tissue. Systemic symptoms like fever, low blood pressure, or shock may indicate spreading infection (sepsis).
When to see a doctor:
Immediately, if any symptoms of dead or infected tissue appear—gangrene is a medical emergency. Treatment often involves antibiotics, surgical removal of dead tissue, and oxygen therapy.
Natural Remedies
Control Blood Sugar: Especially important for people with diabetes to maintain circulation.
Support Circulation: Regular gentle exercise and avoiding tight shoes or long periods of immobility.
Foot Care Routine: Especially for diabetics—check feet daily for cuts, blisters, or discoloration.
Wound Hygiene: Clean minor cuts and cover them properly to prevent infection.
Anti-inflammatory Diet: Promotes healthy blood flow and vascular integrity.
