Gonorrhea
Synopsis of Gonorrhea
Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It affects both men and women and most commonly infects the genitals, rectum, and throat. It is transmitted through vaginal, anal, or oral sex with an infected partner. Gonorrhea is highly contagious and often occurs alongside other STIs, including chlamydia and HIV.
In many cases, gonorrhea is asymptomatic, especially in women. When symptoms do occur, they may include:
-
In women: painful urination, increased vaginal discharge, pelvic pain, or bleeding between periods
-
In men: painful urination, white/yellow/green penile discharge, or swollen testicles
-
In both: rectal pain, discharge, or bleeding (in cases of rectal infection), and sore throat (in pharyngeal infection)
If untreated, gonorrhea can cause serious complications, including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), infertility, epididymitis, and systemic infection (disseminated gonococcal infection). It also increases the risk of HIV transmission.
When to see a doctor:
Immediately, if you experience symptoms or suspect exposure to an infected partner. Gonorrhea is diagnosed through lab testing (urine, swabs) and treated with antibiotics. Reinfection is common, so partner testing and treatment are crucial.
Natural remedies for Gonorrhea
Hydration: Helps flush toxins and supports immune response.
Avoid Sexual Activity: Until treatment is complete and follow-up testing confirms the infection is cleared.
Strengthen Immunity: Rest, nutrient-rich diet, and stress reduction support recovery.
Probiotics: May support urogenital flora, especially during or after antibiotic use.
