Synopsis of Hashimoto's Disease

Hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, leading to chronic inflammation and gradual destruction of thyroid tissue. This results in hypothyroidism, or low thyroid hormone production, which slows down metabolism and affects multiple body systems.

Hashimoto’s is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in developed countries and typically affects women more than men, especially between the ages of 30 and 60. It is often genetically influenced and may occur alongside other autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes or celiac disease.

Common symptoms include:

  • Fatigue

  • Weight gain

  • Cold intolerance

  • Dry skin

  • Depression or low mood

  • Brain fog or poor concentration

  • Constipation

  • Thinning hair or hair loss

  • Irregular or heavy periods

  • Puffy face or hoarseness

Over time, the thyroid may become enlarged (goiter) or shrink. Blood tests typically show elevated TSH and low free T4, along with thyroid antibodies (anti-TPO and anti-thyroglobulin).

When to see a doctor:
If you experience persistent fatigue, unexplained weight gain, mood changes, or other symptoms of hypothyroidism, testing for thyroid function and antibodies is advised. Early detection helps prevent long-term complications.

Natural remedies for Hashimoto's Disease

Gluten-Free or Anti-Inflammatory Diet: May reduce immune reactivity in some individuals.

Reduce Environmental Toxins: Avoid plastics, pesticides, and endocrine disruptors.

Manage Stress: Chronic cortisol elevation can worsen autoimmune attacks on the thyroid.

Ensure Adequate Sleep and Rest: Promotes hormone balance and immune regulation.

Avoid Excess Iodine and Soy: These may worsen symptoms in some autoimmune thyroid conditions.
