Synopsis

Hemorrhoids are swollen and inflamed veins in the lower rectum or anus, similar to varicose veins. They are classified as either internal (inside the rectum) or external (under the skin around the anus). Hemorrhoids are common and can result from increased pressure in the pelvic and rectal region, often due to straining during bowel movements, chronic constipation, prolonged sitting, pregnancy, or obesity.

Common symptoms include:

  • Pain or discomfort during or after bowel movements

  • Itching or irritation in the anal region

  • Swelling or lumps near the anus

  • Bright red blood on toilet paper or in the stool

  • Mucus discharge

  • A feeling of incomplete evacuation

Though often mild, hemorrhoids can be persistent and uncomfortable. Severe or thrombosed hemorrhoids may cause intense pain and require medical treatment, including procedures such as rubber band ligation, sclerotherapy, or surgical removal.

When to see a doctor:
If symptoms persist, worsen, or are accompanied by significant bleeding, consult a healthcare provider to rule out other rectal or gastrointestinal conditions.
