Synopsis of Hepatitis

Hepatitis refers to inflammation of the liver, a vital organ responsible for detoxification, metabolism, digestion, and hormone regulation. The condition can be acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term), and it ranges in severity from mild to life-threatening. The most common forms are caused by viral infections—specifically hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E—but it can also be triggered by alcohol, toxins, drugs, or autoimmune activity.

Types of hepatitis:

  • Hepatitis A: Transmitted through contaminated food/water; usually resolves on its own.

  • Hepatitis B: Spread via blood and bodily fluids; may become chronic.

  • Hepatitis C: Blood-borne; commonly becomes chronic and may lead to cirrhosis or cancer.

  • Hepatitis D: Requires hepatitis B co-infection.

  • Hepatitis E: Fecal-oral transmission; often seen in developing countries.

  • Non-viral causes: Alcoholic hepatitis, drug-induced hepatitis, autoimmune hepatitis.

Common symptoms include:

  • Fatigue

  • Loss of appetite

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Abdominal pain (especially upper right side)

  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)

  • Dark urine and pale stools

  • Joint pain (especially with hepatitis B)

When to see a doctor:
If you experience symptoms of jaundice, persistent nausea, fatigue, or elevated liver enzymes, seek medical evaluation. Chronic hepatitis may lead to liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, liver failure, or hepatocellular carcinoma.

Natural remedies for Hepatitis

Avoid Alcohol and Processed Foods: Reduces liver burden and inflammation.

Hydrate Well: Supports detoxification and cellular repair.

Eat Liver-Supportive Foods: Such as leafy greens, beets, turmeric, and garlic.

Avoid Over-the-Counter Medications That Stress the Liver: Especially acetaminophen (Tylenol).

Rest and Reduce Physical Exertion: Allows energy to focus on immune repair.
