Synopsis of Kidney Infection

A kidney infection, medically known as pyelonephritis, is a serious bacterial infection of one or both kidneys. It typically begins as a lower urinary tract infection (UTI) that spreads upward through the ureters to the kidneys. Prompt treatment is crucial to prevent kidney damage, sepsis, or recurrent infections.

Kidney infections are more common in women due to their shorter urethra, and they may also occur in people with urinary tract blockages, diabetes, or weakened immune systems.

Common symptoms include:

  • Fever and chills

  • Flank or back pain (often one-sided)

  • Frequent, painful urination

  • Cloudy, foul-smelling, or bloody urine

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Fatigue or general malaise

Complications (if untreated or severe):

  • Kidney scarring

  • Chronic kidney disease

  • Bloodstream infection (sepsis)

  • Recurrent infections

When to see a doctor:
Seek medical care immediately if you experience high fever, persistent back pain, vomiting, or signs of UTI plus systemic illness. Diagnosis includes urinalysis, urine culture, blood tests, and possibly imaging (ultrasound or CT scan). Antibiotics are the standard treatment.

Natural remedies for Kidney Infection

Increase Fluid Intake: Helps flush bacteria from the urinary tract.

Use Heat Packs on Lower Back: May ease discomfort and muscle tension.

Avoid Bladder Irritants: Reduce caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods during infection.

Urinate Frequently: Don’t hold urine—this encourages bacterial buildup.

Support Immunity and Inflammation Control: With rest and natural remedies (under supervision).
