Ménière’s Disease
Synopsis
Ménière’s disease is a chronic inner ear disorder that affects balance and hearing, most often in one ear. It results from abnormal fluid buildup in the inner ear (endolymphatic hydrops), which disrupts the normal function of the labyrinth—a part of the ear responsible for balance and sound transmission. The condition is episodic and tends to occur in cycles or flare-ups, which can be unpredictable and debilitating.
Classic symptoms (often occur together in episodes):
-
Vertigo: Sudden spinning sensation lasting 20 minutes to several hours
-
Hearing loss: Typically fluctuating and affects low frequencies early on
-
Tinnitus: Ringing, buzzing, or roaring in the affected ear
-
Ear fullness or pressure
-
Balance disturbances, nausea, or vomiting
Additional characteristics:
-
Symptoms typically begin between ages 20–50
-
Episodes may occur in clusters followed by remission
-
Over time, hearing loss can become permanent
-
Cause is often idiopathic, but may be linked to autoimmunity, allergies, genetics, or viral infections
When to see a doctor:
Seek medical attention for repeated vertigo attacks, hearing changes, or imbalance. Diagnosis involves hearing tests (audiometry), balance evaluations, and MRI to rule out other causes (e.g., vestibular migraine, acoustic neuroma).
Natural Remedies
Reduce Sodium Intake: A low-salt diet may help minimize fluid retention in the inner ear.
Avoid Caffeine, Alcohol, and Tobacco: These can worsen symptoms or trigger attacks.
Stay Hydrated and Manage Stress: Dehydration and emotional stress can provoke episodes.
Eat Regular, Balanced Meals: Helps regulate fluid balance and blood sugar.
Use Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT): Improves balance between attacks.
