Measles
Synopsis
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection caused by the measles virus (a paramyxovirus), primarily affecting children but also dangerous in unvaccinated adults. It spreads through respiratory droplets and can remain airborne or on surfaces for up to two hours. Measles is preventable through the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella), which has dramatically reduced global incidence.
After an incubation period of 7–14 days, symptoms appear in three stages:
-
Prodromal (early) phase:
-
High fever (often over 104°F / 40°C)
-
Cough, runny nose, and conjunctivitis (the "three Cs")
-
Koplik spots (tiny white spots on the inside of the cheeks)
-
-
Eruptive (rash) phase:
-
Red, blotchy rash that begins on the face and spreads downward
-
Rash typically lasts 5–6 days
-
Fever may spike again with rash onset
-
-
Recovery phase:
-
Symptoms gradually resolve
-
Immune system may remain suppressed for weeks
-
Complications (more common in children under 5 and adults over 20):
-
Ear infections
-
Diarrhea
-
Pneumonia
-
Encephalitis (brain inflammation)
-
Vision loss or blindness
-
Death (especially in malnourished or immunocompromised individuals)
When to see a doctor:
Seek immediate care for high fever, difficulty breathing, seizures, or if exposure occurred in an unvaccinated person. Measles is a reportable disease and requires prompt public health notification. Diagnosis is confirmed with blood tests and clinical history.
Natural Remedies
Stay Hydrated: Prevent dehydration from fever or diarrhea.
Use Cool Compresses: Reduce fever and relieve skin discomfort.
Protect the Eyes from Bright Light: Reduces irritation during conjunctivitis.
Rest in a Quiet, Dark Room: Helps with sensitivity and recovery.
Isolate the Infected Person: To prevent transmission to others.
