Numbness
Synopsis of Numbness
Numbness is the loss or reduction of normal sensation in part of the body, often described as tingling, “pins and needles,” or complete loss of feeling. It may be temporary—due to pressure on a nerve or poor circulation—or chronic, signaling an underlying issue involving the nervous system, blood supply, or metabolic dysfunction. It can affect any body part, but is most common in the hands, feet, arms, or legs.
Common causes include:
-
Nerve compression or injury: From posture, trauma, or repetitive use (e.g., carpal tunnel, sciatica)
-
Peripheral neuropathy: Often from diabetes, alcohol use, or infections
-
Vitamin deficiencies: Especially B12, B6, and folate
-
Poor circulation: From vascular disease or Raynaud’s phenomenon
-
Autoimmune disorders: Like multiple sclerosis or lupus
-
Stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA)
-
Herniated spinal discs or spinal stenosis
Associated symptoms may include:
-
Tingling or “pins and needles”
-
Muscle weakness or twitching
-
Coldness in the affected area
-
Poor coordination or balance
-
Burning or shooting pain (especially in neuropathy)
When to see a doctor:
Seek urgent care if numbness is sudden, one-sided, or accompanied by slurred speech, confusion, or paralysis, as it could indicate a stroke. Chronic or progressive numbness should also be evaluated to rule out neurological or systemic causes.
Natural remedies for Numbness
