Synopsis

Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens), commonly known as wild hydrangea or seven bark, is a deciduous shrub native to the eastern United States, historically used in Native American and Western herbal medicine. The root and rhizome are the parts most often used medicinally and contain hydrangin (a glycoside), saponins, flavonoids, resins, and minerals, which contribute to its traditional roles as a diuretic, kidney tonic, and anti-inflammatory agent.

In modern herbalism, hydrangea root is valued primarily for urinary tract and kidney support, particularly in cases of bladder irritation, kidney stones, gravel (urinary sediment), and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It acts as a mild diuretic, helping to flush out irritants, reduce urinary inflammation, and soothe the mucous membranes of the urinary system. Hydrangea may also soften and dissolve urinary deposits, making it helpful in formulas aimed at preventing or reducing kidney stone formation.

Hydrangea is commonly used in tincture or capsule form, often in combination with other urinary herbs like uva ursi, gravel root, or marshmallow root.

Historical Use
Hydrangea arborescens was highly valued by Native American tribes, particularly the Cherokee, who used the root for kidney and bladder complaints, including gravel, stones, and difficult urination. It was also considered a blood purifier and general tonic.

European settlers adopted hydrangea into American herbal medicine, and by the 19th century, it became a staple in Eclectic medical practice, where it was prescribed for prostatic enlargement, cystitis, nephritis, and painful urination. Herbalists referred to it as a "stone-breaking" herb, helpful in both the dissolution and prevention of calculi (stones) in the kidneys and bladder.

The nickname “seven bark” comes from the plant’s uniquely layered stem bark, which peels in concentric rings and was sometimes used in traditional preparations.

Today, hydrangea root remains a respected herb in urinary tract health protocols, particularly for individuals prone to urinary inflammation, gravel, or mild prostatic discomfort, continuing its legacy as a gentle, effective kidney and bladder botanical rooted in both Indigenous and Eclectic herbal traditions.
