Synopsis

Plant sterols are naturally occurring compounds found in the cell membranes of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. Structurally similar to cholesterol, they compete with dietary cholesterol for absorption in the digestive tract, helping to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. In addition to cardiovascular support, plant sterols—particularly beta-sitosterol—are also used for prostate health and immune modulation. They are commonly added to functional foods and supplements for cholesterol and hormone balance.
