Root tuber (root tuber)
Synopsis
A root tuber is a thickened, nutrient-rich underground plant structure that stores energy in the form of starches. Unlike true tubers (like potatoes), root tubers develop from the root system, not the stem. Common medicinal root tubers include yams, sweet potatoes, and certain herbs like Paeonia (peony), Rehmannia, and Asparagus cochinchinensis. These structures are often rich in complex carbohydrates, mucilage, and phytochemicals that support hormonal balance, digestion, and immune function.
