Flaxseed oil is one of nature’s richest plant sources of essential fatty acids (EFAs). Flaxseed oil is rich in omega-3 in the form of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).
In the body, ALA is converted into two other, more bioavailable fatty acids — eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The American Heart Association has endorsed omega-3 fatty acids as good for the heart.
Supportive but inconclusive research shows that the consumption of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Through the years, hundreds of studies have established that individuals with diets high in omega-3 fatty acids may experience a decrease in the risk of heart attack, stroke, and abnormal heart rhythms. Two clinical studies concluded that including omega-3 rich foods or supplements in the diet could help prevent sudden death from abnormal heart rhythms.
Studies show that omega-3 fatty acids may help support healthy cholesterol levels and blood triglycerides, and prevent clots in arteries, which may result in strokes, heart attacks, and thromboses. Other benefits from supplementing flaxseed oil may include increased energy, faster healing, PMS relief, and much more. Further studies are necessary, however, to establish concrete health benefits.
Besides omega-3 fatty acids, flaxseed oil contains chemicals called lignans. Scientists believe lignans have antioxidant properties. Further research is ongoing.
Suggested Use: As a dietary supplement, take one (1) soft gelatin capsule with each meal.
