Evidence supporting the use of: White Pear
For the health condition: Abdominal Pain
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
White pear (Pyrus spp.), particularly the Asian white pear, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other East Asian medical systems. Traditionally, white pear is believed to have cooling, moistening, and detoxifying properties, and is often recommended to ease symptoms related to the respiratory system, such as cough and sore throat. Its use for abdominal pain, however, is less prominent but does appear in some traditional texts, where pears are thought to soothe the digestive tract and alleviate discomfort associated with heat or dryness in the stomach and intestines.
Despite these traditional uses, there is little scientific research that directly examines the effectiveness of white pear for treating abdominal pain. Most of the available evidence is anecdotal or based on historical texts rather than controlled clinical studies. Some studies suggest that pears contain fiber and polyphenols, which may support digestive health in general, but there is insufficient scientific data specifically linking white pear consumption to significant relief from abdominal pain. Thus, while the use of white pear for this purpose is rooted in tradition, its efficacy is not well-supported by modern research.
