Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Annatto oil, derived from the seeds of the Bixa orellana plant, has a long history of traditional use in Central and South American cultures, particularly among indigenous communities. It has been applied topically to wounds, abrasions, and burns, largely due to its vibrant color and purported soothing properties. Traditional healers have used annatto preparations as protective salves, possibly because of its emollient nature and the belief that it helps the skin recover and prevents infection.

From a scientific standpoint, annatto seeds contain tocotrienols (a form of vitamin E) and carotenoids such as bixin and norbixin, which exhibit antioxidant activity. Some laboratory studies have shown antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects of annatto extracts. However, direct clinical evidence supporting the efficacy of annatto oil for treating abrasions in humans is lacking. Most of the support for using annatto oil on abrasions is thus rooted in traditional practices rather than validated by modern clinical trials or robust scientific studies. The evidence rating reflects this limited scientific validation, though the historical use is well documented.
