Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Bee propolis has a longstanding history of use in traditional medicine for wound healing, including minor abrasions. More recently, scientific studies have provided some evidence supporting its efficacy for this purpose. Propolis contains a complex mixture of polyphenols, flavonoids, and aromatic acids, which have demonstrated antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties in laboratory and animal studies. These properties are believed to contribute to accelerated wound healing and reduced infection risk.

Several small clinical trials and in vivo studies have reported that topical application of propolis extracts can promote re-epithelialization, reduce inflammation, and improve tissue repair in minor wounds and skin abrasions. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in the International Journal of Dermatology (2013) found that a propolis ointment was as effective as silver sulfadiazine in healing minor burns and abrasions, with fewer side effects. Other studies have corroborated its antimicrobial effectiveness against common skin pathogens, which may help prevent secondary infections in abrasions.

However, while there is a growing body of supportive evidence, the number of high-quality, large-scale human studies remains limited. As such, the scientific rating is moderate (3/5), reflecting promising but not yet definitive evidence for the use of bee propolis in supporting the healing of abrasions.
