For the health condition: Abrasions
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bletilla striata, commonly known as Chinese ground orchid, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for treating skin wounds and abrasions. The tuber of Bletilla striata is often processed into a powder and applied topically to minor cuts, abrasions, and ulcers to stop bleeding, reduce swelling, and promote healing. Traditional texts such as the "Chinese Pharmacopoeia" describe its use as a hemostatic and wound-healing agent. The main constituents, including polysaccharides and glucomannan, are believed in TCM to form a protective barrier over the wound, facilitating tissue repair and preventing infection.
Some contemporary in vitro and animal studies have investigated Bletilla’s wound healing properties, suggesting potential mechanisms such as promoting fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis, but direct, high-quality clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, while its use is well supported by traditional practice and some preliminary pharmacological findings, robust scientific validation remains limited. Overall, Bletilla’s application for abrasions is mainly justified by tradition, with a moderate level of preliminary supportive evidence.
