Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

California Goldenrod (Solidago californica) has a history of traditional use among various Native American tribes and herbalists for addressing skin ailments, including abrasions, minor wounds, and sores. The aerial parts of the plant were typically prepared as poultices, washes, or infusions and applied topically to help cleanse wounds and promote healing. Ethnobotanical records, including those compiled by Daniel E. Moerman, document such uses, particularly among tribes such as the Ohlone and others native to California. The rationale for its application is primarily based on the plant's purported antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties as recognized in folk medicine. However, scientific validation for the use of California Goldenrod specifically for abrasions remains limited. While certain Solidago species have demonstrated antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects in laboratory studies, these studies are sparse and rarely specific to Solidago californica. No clinical trials or rigorous pharmacological studies have been conducted to directly substantiate its efficacy for treating abrasions in humans. Thus, while its use for this condition is rooted in traditional knowledge, the evidence base does not extend beyond ethnobotanical and anecdotal reports.
