Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cinquefoil (Potentilla species) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe and parts of Asia. Folk medicine practitioners have used the leaves and aerial parts of cinquefoil as topical treatments for minor wounds, abrasions, and skin inflammations. The plant is rich in tannins, which are known for their astringent properties. This astringency is believed to help contract tissues and reduce bleeding, which may aid in the management of minor abrasions. Traditional herbal texts from the Middle Ages, as well as later pharmacopeias, reference the use of cinquefoil poultices or washes to cleanse and promote healing of superficial skin injuries.

However, while these traditional uses are well documented, there is limited scientific research specifically evaluating the efficacy of cinquefoil for treating abrasions. Some laboratory studies have identified anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial compounds in Potentilla species, but these findings have not been directly correlated with clinical outcomes for wound healing or abrasion care. Systematic reviews and clinical trials on this specific use are lacking. Thus, the use of cinquefoil for abrasions is primarily justified by tradition rather than robust scientific validation.
