Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cymbidium goeringii, commonly known as the Asian orchid, has a long history of use in traditional East Asian medicine, particularly in China, Korea, and Japan. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), extracts and decoctions from the pseudobulbs and leaves of Cymbidium goeringii are applied topically or used as washes to promote healing of minor wounds, abrasions, and skin irritations. This practice is documented in classical herbals, such as the Bencao Gangmu (Compendium of Materia Medica), and persists in some folk remedies today. The rationale in TCM is based on the belief that the plant “clears heat,” “detoxifies,” and “promotes tissue regeneration.”

However, there is a lack of robust scientific studies validating these traditional uses. Few modern pharmacological investigations have explored Cymbidium goeringii’s effects on skin healing or antibacterial activity. The majority of available evidence is anecdotal or derived from historical texts rather than controlled research. Therefore, while Cymbidium goeringii is traditionally used for abrasions, current clinical and pharmacological evidence is limited, and its efficacy for treating abrasions has not been conclusively demonstrated in scientific literature.
