Evidence supporting the use of: Dragon's Blood
For the health condition: Abrasions
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Dragon's Blood, a natural resin obtained from several plant species (notably Daemonorops draco and Croton lechleri), has a long history of traditional use for wound healing, including abrasions. Recent scientific research has provided moderate evidence supporting its efficacy. Several in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated that extracts of Dragon's Blood possess antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. For example, studies have shown that Croton lechleri sap contains proanthocyanidins and taspine, compounds that can promote re-epithelialization, enhance collagen formation, and reduce inflammation at wound sites. Clinical trials, though limited in number and scale, suggest that topical application of Dragon’s Blood resin or its extracts may accelerate the healing of minor wounds and abrasions by forming a protective barrier and stimulating tissue regeneration. However, the quality of evidence is moderate, as most studies are preclinical or small-scale human trials, and there is a lack of large, rigorous, placebo-controlled clinical studies. Despite this, the combination of laboratory and early clinical data provides a scientific basis for its use in treating abrasions, supporting the traditional applications of this resin.
