Evidence supporting the use of: Eastern Red Cedar
For the health condition: Abrasions
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) has a history of traditional use among various Native American tribes and early settlers in North America for a variety of medicinal purposes, including the treatment of minor skin wounds and abrasions. Traditionally, the leaves, berries, or bark were prepared as poultices or infusions and applied externally to the skin to promote healing or serve as an antiseptic. These uses are mainly rooted in ethnobotanical reports and folklore, with some documentation in herbal compendia and accounts from the early 20th century. However, there is a lack of rigorous scientific studies specifically validating the efficacy or safety of Eastern Red Cedar for treating abrasions. While some laboratory research has shown mild antimicrobial activity in extracts of Juniperus virginiana, these results are preliminary and not specific to wound care. No clinical trials or systematic reviews substantiate its benefit for abrasions. Therefore, while its use is based on tradition, the evidence supporting its effectiveness for this purpose is weak and should be considered anecdotal rather than evidence-based.
