Rating (out of 5): 3

Fibrinase, an enzymatic preparation primarily containing proteolytic enzymes such as fibrinolysin and deoxyribonuclease, is used in the management of abrasions and other superficial wounds. The rationale for its use is based on its ability to enzymatically debride necrotic tissue and promote wound healing. Several clinical studies and reviews have demonstrated that topical enzyme preparations can accelerate the removal of devitalized tissue, which is essential in wound bed preparation and can facilitate faster healing of abrasions compared to conventional treatments alone. The evidence supporting the use of Fibrinase and similar enzyme-based debriding agents is moderate. While there are randomized controlled trials and case series reporting improved outcomes, such as faster healing rates and reduced infection risk, the overall number and quality of these studies are limited. Most evidence is derived from older literature and small-scale clinical investigations rather than large, high-quality multicenter trials. Major wound care guidelines acknowledge enzymatic debridement as an option, particularly when surgical debridement is not feasible, but do not specifically endorse Fibrinase over other agents. In summary, there is scientific validation for the use of Fibrinase in treating abrasions, with a moderate level of evidence indicating benefit in wound debridement and healing, though more robust and contemporary research would strengthen these recommendations.
