Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Gambir (Uncaria gambir), an extract from the leaves of the Uncaria plant, has a longstanding history of use in traditional medicine throughout Southeast Asia. Its application for minor wounds and abrasions is primarily based on its astringent properties, attributed to its high catechin and tannin content. In traditional practice, gambir is applied topically to abrasions to help stop bleeding, reduce exudation, and promote wound drying, leveraging its ability to constrict tissues and form a protective barrier. However, while these uses are well-documented in ethnobotanical literature, rigorous scientific evidence supporting its efficacy specifically for treating abrasions is limited. Laboratory studies have confirmed the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of gambir extracts, which could theoretically contribute to wound healing and infection prevention. Nevertheless, there are few, if any, controlled clinical trials evaluating its direct effectiveness or safety in managing abrasions in humans. Thus, current support for gambir's use in this context remains rooted in traditional knowledge rather than strong scientific validation.
