Evidence supporting the use of: Illite
For the health condition: Abrasions
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Illite is a type of clay mineral commonly used in traditional and folk medicine, particularly in the form of clay poultices or masks applied to the skin for various ailments, including abrasions. Historically, illite and other clays (such as kaolin and bentonite) have been valued for their absorbent and soothing properties. In many cultures, clay has been applied to minor wounds, abrasions, and skin irritations to help dry out secretions and provide a protective barrier. The traditional use is largely based on empirical observations and anecdotal evidence rather than robust scientific validation.
There are some in vitro studies suggesting that natural clays, including illite, may possess mild antibacterial properties due to their ability to adsorb bacteria and toxins. However, direct evidence supporting the efficacy of illite specifically for the treatment or support of abrasions is limited. No high-quality clinical trials exist to validate its effectiveness or safety for this use. Most of the available information is extrapolated from the broader use of medicinal clays or anecdotal reports. As such, while the use of illite for abrasions is rooted in tradition, scientific evidence supporting its benefit is weak, and it should not replace standard wound care practices.
