Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Immortelle (Helichrysum italicum), also known as everlasting, has been used traditionally in folk medicine for its skin-healing properties, including for the treatment of abrasions and minor wounds. The use of Immortelle for abrasions is primarily justified by traditional practices, particularly in Mediterranean regions where the plant is native. Traditional herbalists have valued its essential oil and extracts for their purported anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and cicatrizant (wound-healing) effects.

There is limited scientific research that specifically investigates the use of Immortelle for skin abrasions. Some in vitro and animal studies indicate that Helichrysum italicum essential oil contains compounds such as flavonoids, phloroglucinols, and terpenes, which may exert anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. These properties could theoretically support wound healing and infection prevention. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the evidence remains preliminary. The rating of 2 reflects that while there are plausible mechanisms and some supportive laboratory studies, clinical evidence is sparse and the primary justification for use remains rooted in traditional practice rather than established scientific validation.
