Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Asia and the Middle East, for its purported wound-healing and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used in various topical preparations for minor skin injuries, including abrasions, due to its soothing effects and perceived ability to promote healing. Historical texts and ethnobotanical literature describe the application of licorice root poultices or extracts to wounded or inflamed skin.

From a scientific perspective, licorice root contains compounds such as glycyrrhizin, glabridin, and liquiritigenin, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties in vitro and in animal models. Some laboratory studies suggest these properties could be beneficial in wound healing; for example, licorice extract may reduce inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress markers.
