Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitex negundo, commonly known as the Chinese chaste tree or Nirgundi, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine. It is traditionally applied topically as a poultice, paste, or oil to support the healing of abrasions, wounds, and other skin ailments. The rationale in these systems is based on Vitex negundo’s reputed anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antimicrobial properties, which are believed to help soothe the skin, reduce pain, and prevent infection. Some ethnobotanical surveys and classical Ayurvedic texts document its use in treating minor wounds and abrasions.

However, while there are some in vitro and animal studies suggesting Vitex negundo extracts possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity, direct scientific studies evaluating its efficacy specifically for abrasions in humans are lacking. The traditional use is thus somewhat supported by preliminary pharmacological data, but robust clinical evidence is absent. Therefore, the use of Vitex negundo for abrasions is best described as "traditional" with a moderate evidence rating, reflecting mostly historical use and limited scientific exploration.
