Andrographis paniculata, commonly known as "king of bitters," is widely used in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and Southeast Asian folk medicine. In these traditions, andrographis has been employed for its "heat-clearing" and "detoxifying" properties, which are believed to help manage various types of infections and inflammatory conditions, including abscesses. Specifically, in TCM, andrographis is sometimes included in herbal formulas prescribed for "toxic swellings," sores, and abscesses, where it is thought to reduce swelling and promote pus drainage.

However, there is minimal scientific research directly investigating andrographis for the treatment or support of abscesses in humans. Most modern research on andrographis focuses on its potential benefits for respiratory infections, inflammation, and general immune support. While some in vitro and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, these findings have not been specifically validated in the context of abscess treatment. Thus, the use of andrographis for abscesses remains primarily rooted in traditional practices, with little to no contemporary clinical evidence to substantiate its efficacy for this particular condition.
