Ceanothus integerrimus, commonly known as deerbrush or California lilac, has a history of use in traditional Native American herbal medicine, particularly among tribes in California and the western United States. The root and leaves have been prepared as poultices or washes for use on skin infections, wounds, and abscesses. Ethnobotanical records indicate the plant was applied externally to help draw out infection and promote healing of abscesses. However, this use is primarily based on traditional knowledge and anecdotal reports; there is no substantial body of scientific literature or clinical research validating its efficacy for abscesses or skin infections. The plant contains saponins and other phytochemicals that might have mild antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory properties, but these effects have not been rigorously studied in relation to abscess treatment. Therefore, while Ceanothus integerrimus has been used for abscesses in traditional medicine, the evidence supporting its effectiveness is weak and mostly historical rather than scientific.
