Fomes fomentarius, commonly known as tinder fungus or hoof fungus, has a long history of use in traditional medicine across various cultures, particularly in Europe and Asia. Historically, it has been applied externally to wounds, ulcers, and abscesses for its purported antimicrobial and drying properties. Ethnobotanical records from Eastern European and Asian folk medicine mention its use as a styptic (to stop bleeding) and as a dressing to dry out or draw pus from abscesses. The fungus was typically processed into a felt-like material and placed directly on the affected area. Sometimes, it was also burned to produce a smoke believed to have disinfectant effects. However, there is minimal to no robust scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Fomes fomentarius in treating abscesses specifically. While some in vitro studies have identified antimicrobial compounds within the fungus (such as fomentariol and other triterpenoids) that exhibit activity against certain bacteria and fungi, these findings have not been directly linked to clinical outcomes in the treatment of abscesses. Additionally, no clinical trials have evaluated its effectiveness for this indication in humans. Therefore, its use for abscesses is primarily justified by tradition rather than scientific evidence.
