Evidence supporting the use of: Oldenlandia
For the health condition: Abscesses
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Oldenlandia, particularly Oldenlandia diffusa (also known as Hedyotis diffusa), has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for the treatment of abscesses, boils, and other inflammatory conditions. In TCM, it is known as "Bai Hua She She Cao" and is considered to have heat-clearing and detoxifying properties. It is often prescribed alone or in combination with other herbs for conditions believed to involve "heat toxin," including abscesses of the skin, breast, and internal organs. There is some preclinical evidence (in vitro and animal studies) suggesting anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and immunomodulatory effects of extracts from Oldenlandia diffusa. A few small-scale studies and case reports have described its use for skin infections and abscesses, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. The majority of the evidence remains anecdotal and traditional, rather than grounded in modern, high-quality clinical research. Systematic reviews and pharmacological studies note the herb's potential, but consistently highlight the need for more rigorous clinical trials to confirm efficacy and safety in abscess treatment. As a result, the use of Oldenlandia for abscesses is primarily justified by tradition, with limited scientific validation to date.
