Paederia foetida, commonly known as "skunk vine," has a long-standing history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in South and Southeast Asia. Traditional healers have employed its leaves and other parts topically or as poultices to support the healing of abscesses, boils, and other skin infections. The rationale behind its traditional use stems from its perceived anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which are believed to help reduce swelling and promote drainage of pus from abscesses. Ethnobotanical surveys from India, Bangladesh, and neighboring regions document the use of Paederia foetida paste or decoctions applied directly to affected areas as a folk remedy. Scientific validation for these uses is limited. Preliminary phytochemical screenings have identified the presence of iridoid glycosides, flavonoids, and other secondary metabolites with potential anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. However, robust clinical or laboratory studies specifically investigating the efficacy of Paederia foetida for abscesses are lacking. The available evidence is largely anecdotal or based on traditional knowledge rather than rigorous scientific testing.
