Additionally, the latex of papaya has been used as a poultice in some cultures for its purported antimicrobial properties.

From a scientific perspective, there is limited but growing evidence supporting these traditional uses. In vitro studies have shown that papain possesses antimicrobial properties against certain bacteria, and its enzymatic action can facilitate the breakdown of dead tissue, which is important for abscess management.
