Petiveria alliacea, commonly known as "guinea hen weed" or "anamu," has a long history of use in traditional medicine across Central and South America, the Caribbean, and West Africa. It has been employed in various folk remedies for its purported antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. Specifically, traditional healers have used poultices or decoctions of Petiveria alliacea leaves or roots to treat skin infections, abscesses, and other localized swellings, often attributing its efficacy to its strong odor and perceived "drawing out" qualities. The scientific evidence to support its use for abscesses is limited but not entirely absent. Some in vitro studies have demonstrated antimicrobial activity of Petiveria alliacea extracts against certain bacteria and fungi, which could theoretically be relevant for abscesses caused by infection. However, there are no published clinical trials or robust animal studies directly examining its effectiveness in treating abscesses specifically.
