Stillingia (Stillingia sylvatica), also known as "Queen's Delight," is a plant native to the southeastern United States and has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly among Native American and early European-American practitioners. Its root was commonly prepared as a decoction or tincture and used as an "alterative"—an old herbal term for remedies believed to purify the blood and promote the elimination of toxins. Within this tradition, stillingia was recommended for various skin conditions, including abscesses, boils, and other suppurative (pus-forming) disorders. The rationale was based on the belief that such skin eruptions were manifestations of underlying systemic imbalances or "impurities," and that stillingia could help resolve them by supporting detoxification and stimulating elimination via the lymphatic system.

However, scientific studies validating these uses are lacking. Modern pharmacological research on stillingia is sparse, and while the plant is known to contain saponins and other compounds with potential biological activity, there is no direct evidence demonstrating its efficacy in treating abscesses or skin infections. Furthermore, stillingia root can be toxic in large doses, causing gastrointestinal distress and other adverse effects. In summary, while stillingia’s use for abscesses is well-documented in historical herbal practice, there is little scientific support for its effectiveness or safety for this specific indication.
