Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Convolvulus pluricaulis, commonly known as Shankhpushpi, is an herb traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine as a cognitive enhancer and nervine tonic. Its use to support the "acetylcholine body system" specifically is not a classical Ayurvedic designation, but the herb has long been associated with promoting memory, learning, and mental clarity. These cognitive effects are historically attributed to its "medhya rasayana" properties, a category in Ayurveda for memory and intellect-promoting herbs.

Scientific investigation into Convolvulus pluricaulis has identified the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, and other phytochemicals. Some animal studies suggest that extracts of this plant may increase acetylcholine levels in the brain or inhibit acetylcholinesterase, the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine. For example, a few preclinical studies in rodents have shown improved performance in memory and learning tasks after administration of Convolvulus pluricaulis extracts, with proposed mechanisms including modulation of cholinergic neurotransmission.

However, robust clinical evidence in humans is lacking, and references to acetylcholine are generally extrapolated from animal models or in vitro studies. Thus, while there is a long history of traditional use for cognitive support and some preliminary scientific exploration, strong validation for its use specifically to support acetylcholine function in humans is limited.
