Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ginkgo biloba is often used as a cognitive enhancer, with much of its application focused on supporting memory, attention, and overall brain function. The proposed mechanism involves improved cerebral blood flow and antioxidant effects, rather than direct modulation of the acetylcholine system. However, some studies suggest that Ginkgo may influence cholinergic neurotransmission, possibly enhancing acetylcholine activity in the brain, which is relevant to memory and cognitive processing.

Despite its widespread use and some positive findings—especially in elderly populations or those with mild cognitive impairment—the scientific evidence remains mixed. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have shown modest benefits for cognition, but many others have found no significant effects compared to placebo, and the specific effects on acetylcholine levels or receptors are not conclusively demonstrated in humans.

Traditional use of Ginkgo in Chinese medicine centers on improving blood circulation and treating respiratory ailments rather than targeting the cholinergic (acetylcholine) system directly. The modern rationale for its use in supporting the acetylcholine system is therefore based more on extrapolated pharmacology and preclinical data than on robust clinical evidence. Overall, while there is some scientific exploration of Ginkgo’s effects on acetylcholine, the evidence supporting its use specifically for the acetylcholine body system is limited and inconsistent.
