Bael (Aegle marmelos), also known as Bengal quince or wood apple, has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for digestive issues, including acid indigestion (dyspepsia). In Ayurveda, the unripe and ripe fruits are both employed to soothe digestive discomfort, regulate bowel movements, and reduce symptoms such as bloating and acidity. The fruit is believed to have carminative and mild laxative effects, which may contribute to its traditional use in managing acid-related digestive disturbances. However, scientific research supporting Bael’s efficacy for acid indigestion is limited and mainly based on animal studies or general gastroprotective effects. Some laboratory studies indicate Bael fruit and leaf extracts have anti-ulcer and cytoprotective properties, possibly due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory constituents such as marmelosin and tannins. These effects could theoretically help protect the gastric mucosa and reduce symptoms of acidity, but direct clinical trials in humans focusing on acid indigestion are lacking. In summary, while Bael is traditionally used for acid indigestion in Indian systems of medicine, scientific evidence specific to this indication remains preliminary.
