Evidence supporting the use of: Coconut milk
For the health condition: Acid Indigestion
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Coconut milk has a long history of use in various traditional medicine systems, particularly in Southeast Asian cultures, where it is often recommended for soothing digestive discomfort, including acid indigestion (also known as dyspepsia or heartburn). The rationale behind its use in these traditions is largely anecdotal and based on the soothing, cooling sensation that coconut milk can provide when consumed. Coconut milk is rich in fats and has a mild alkalizing effect, which some believe may help neutralize excess stomach acid and reduce irritation in the digestive tract. However, there is limited direct scientific research that specifically evaluates coconut milk as an effective remedy for acid indigestion. Some in vitro studies suggest that coconut water (not milk) may have some protective effects on gastric mucosa, but these findings cannot be directly extrapolated to coconut milk or to human clinical scenarios. Furthermore, the high fat content of coconut milk may, in some individuals, actually exacerbate reflux or indigestion symptoms by relaxing the lower esophageal sphincter. In summary, while coconut milk is traditionally used for mild digestive complaints, including acid indigestion, scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness for this purpose is minimal, and its effects may vary from person to person.
