Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Potato has been used in some traditional and folk medicine systems as a remedy for acid indigestion or heartburn. The use is primarily based on anecdotal and historical practices, particularly in Europe, where raw potato juice has been consumed to alleviate gastric discomfort. The rationale is that the alkaline nature of raw potato juice might help neutralize stomach acid, offering symptomatic relief. However, scientific evidence supporting this practice is minimal and not robust. There are very few clinical trials or controlled studies assessing the efficacy of potato or potato juice for acid indigestion, and those that exist are generally small, poorly controlled, or inconclusive. Mainstream medical guidelines do not recognize potato as a validated treatment for acid indigestion. Side effects, particularly from consuming raw potatoes (which can contain solanine and other glycoalkaloids), also limit its use. In summary, while potato is used traditionally for acid indigestion and there is some historical precedent, there is a lack of strong scientific validation for its efficacy or safety in this context.
