Rice has been traditionally used in various cultures as a bland, easily digestible food that may help soothe the digestive tract during episodes of acid indigestion (also known as dyspepsia or heartburn). The so-called "BRAT diet" (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast) is often recommended by parents and healthcare providers for mild gastrointestinal upset, including acid indigestion, largely due to rice's low fiber and fat content, which reduces gastric irritation. In traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda, rice porridge or congee is frequently prescribed to calm an upset stomach and manage indigestion.

However, there is limited scientific evidence directly supporting rice as a treatment for acid indigestion. Most recommendations are based on rice’s neutral, non-acidic properties and its ability to absorb excess stomach acids, potentially providing mild symptomatic relief. The evidence supporting rice is therefore rooted in longstanding tradition and anecdotal reports rather than rigorous clinical trials. No major scientific studies have demonstrated that rice actively treats or prevents acid reflux or indigestion beyond being a gentle, non-irritating food option. Overall, while rice may be helpful as part of a bland diet for those experiencing acid indigestion, its role is primarily supportive and based in tradition, not scientific validation.
