Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Abrus (commonly referring to Abrus precatorius, also known as jequirity or rosary pea) has been used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and some folk remedies. Historical records suggest that topical preparations of Abrus leaves or seeds have been used for various skin conditions, including acne, boils, and ulcers. The basis for this usage is largely empirical and rooted in the general anti-inflammatory and purported antimicrobial properties ascribed to the plant in traditional pharmacopeias. However, there is a lack of robust clinical or pharmacological studies directly evaluating the efficacy of Abrus extracts or preparations in the treatment or reduction of acne. Furthermore, Abrus seeds contain abrin, a highly toxic substance, and improper preparation can lead to severe toxicity, which raises significant safety concerns. The traditional use is supported by anecdotal and historical evidence, but, to date, there is minimal scientific validation for its efficacy against acne, and its use is not widely endorsed in modern herbal dermatology due to both efficacy and safety concerns.
