Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

The use of Banyan (Ficus benghalensis) to treat acne is primarily rooted in traditional medicine systems, particularly Ayurveda and folk remedies in South Asia. Traditionally, different parts of the Banyan tree such as its bark, leaves, and sap have been used for a variety of skin ailments, including acne, wounds, and inflammation. These uses are based on the plant’s reputed astringent, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. However, the direct evidence supporting its efficacy for acne specifically is limited to anecdotal reports and historical texts rather than controlled scientific studies. While a few laboratory studies have indicated that extracts from Banyan possess antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities, these findings are preliminary and not directly linked to clinical outcomes for acne treatment in humans. There is currently a lack of robust clinical trials or peer-reviewed research that validates Banyan’s efficacy or safety for acne. Therefore, while the use of Banyan for acne has a basis in tradition, its effectiveness remains largely unsubstantiated by modern scientific standards.
