Cannabigerol (CBG) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in the Cannabis sativa plant. Its use for acne is primarily supported by preliminary scientific studies, rather than traditional use or robust clinical evidence. The scientific rationale for CBG in acne management is based on its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, demonstrated in preclinical models. A 2016 study published in Experimental Dermatology indicated that CBG, like other cannabinoids, can inhibit lipogenesis in human sebocytes, which may help reduce excessive sebum production—a key factor in acne development. Additional in vitro research has shown that CBG exhibits antibacterial activity, including against Propionibacterium acnes (now known as Cutibacterium acnes), the bacteria implicated in acne pathogenesis. However, clinical trials in humans are lacking, and most available data are from laboratory or animal studies. Thus, while there is a scientific basis for considering CBG as a potential acne treatment, the evidence is limited and not yet conclusive. No traditional or historical records support the use of CBG specifically for acne, as its isolation and study are relatively recent. Further research, particularly well-designed human studies, is needed to establish efficacy, safety, and optimal usage protocols for CBG in acne management.
