Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Gallic acid is a naturally occurring polyphenolic compound found in various plants, fruits, and teas. Its relevance to acne treatment is primarily based on its demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. Several in vitro studies have shown that gallic acid can inhibit the growth of Cutibacterium acnes (formerly Propionibacterium acnes), the bacterium implicated in acne pathogenesis. In addition, gallic acid’s anti-inflammatory effects may help reduce the redness and swelling associated with acne lesions. For example, research published in Molecules (2018) and Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology (2010) reports inhibitory effects of gallic acid on acne-causing bacteria and inflammatory markers in cell models. However, it is important to note that while preclinical and laboratory data are promising, there is a lack of robust clinical trials directly investigating gallic acid’s effectiveness and safety as a treatment for acne in humans. Current evidence is limited mostly to laboratory and animal studies, and the efficacy in topical or oral formulations for actual patients remains unproven. Thus, while scientific principles suggest gallic acid may be beneficial for acne, more high-quality clinical research is needed before it can be recommended as an evidence-based treatment.
